‘Dance Queen’ Netflix Movie Review - A Time Travel Saga

Time travel is a concept that never fails to captivate our imaginations, doesn't it? The notion of traversing through time, of revisiting moments lost or experiencing events yet to unfold, holds an undeniable allure. And when intertwined with themes of love, loss, and the longing for connection, it becomes even more enchanting.

Enter the world of "Dance Queen," where the threads of time weave a tapestry of longing and reunion. Meet Hana, a teenager burdened with the weight of an absence she can't quite fill. Her mother, lost to her during the tender moments of childbirth, exists only in memories and the ache of what could have been. As Hana navigates the complexities of adolescence under the gentle guidance of her father, the absence of her mother looms large, a constant reminder of the void in her life. She blames herself for her mother’s death.

But then, the story goes to a flashback through time to 1995, where the vibrant spirit of Hira, Hana's mother, dances through the corridors of youth. A young Hira, who is of Hana’s age skips classes to be with her boyfriend Akbar. (No No, Akbar is not Hana’s father if you are wondering this.) Then enters Dito, a concerned friend of Hira who also secretly likes her and confronts her about Akbar. Yes, Ditto is Hana’s father.

Fast forward to the present day, 2022, where Hana finds solace in the pages of her mother's diary, a bittersweet refuge from the ache of her absence. But one fateful night, as the moon casts its silver glow upon the world, Hana awakens to a sight beyond belief – her mother, Hira, sleeping beside her, a vision of her adolescent self, as real and tangible as the beating of her own heart.

At that moment, reality shatters, giving way to the impossible truth – time has folded upon itself, granting Hana the chance she never dared dream of. Mother and daughter, separated by the cruel hands of fate, find themselves reunited in a dance across time, their hearts echoing the rhythm of a love transcending the boundaries of existence. However, the only twist is that Hira doesn’t know that Hana is her daughter and that she died while giving birth to Hana, because why would she? She has been transported as a teenager into Hana’s world. Over the course of days, Hira understands the relationship her future self shares with Hana and much more about time travel. They develop a beautiful bond. As Hana continues to live in this happiness, a question lingers, haunting in its implications – will Hira ever uncover the truth of her fate? Will she choose to return to the embrace of 1995, to the moments that shaped her destiny? Can they defy time?

In the dance of time, where past, present, and future converge in a delicate balance, the answers lie shrouded in uncertainty, waiting to be unveiled amidst the swirling mists of fate. As Hana and Hira stand at the crossroads of time, their bond forged in love and loss, they embark on a journey that defies the very fabric of reality itself.

Dance Queen is a sweet movie. It fills you with profound sadness when you start understanding the truth about Hana’s life. The plot is well-written and definitely fast-paced. In the end, "Dance Queen" is more than just a movie – it's an experience, a journey into the depths of the human heart where joy and sorrow intertwine, leaving an indelible mark on all who dare to dance along.
