It's Magneto vs Xavier in the ninth episode of X-Men '97. It's also humans vs mutants all over again after the events of the previous episode - A group of people angrily chase Jubilee and Roberto, complaining about the lack of electricity in hospitals. However, the problems of these mortals come across as insignificant because they themselves look insignificant. X-Men '97 merely uses humans for its narrow purpose of generating conflict between Magneto and Xavier. Whatever troubles humans go through, we learn about them from a detached viewpoint. Of course, you can also say that even after spending so much time with the X-Men, we dismiss their issues with a shrug. Everything about X-Men '97 screams, "Inconsequential!"

Now that the Professor has returned, the atmosphere should be infused with a sense of optimism, right? Well, that's not exactly the case, given Jean and Cyclops express their displeasure at Xavier's decision to hand over the school to Magneto. "I wanted you two to be free," Xavier defends himself. "The choice should have been ours," replies Cyclops. The other members make plans to search for Magneto. Logan looks extremely eager to dig his claws into the body of this magnetic field-controlling mutant. It turns out that some dreams do come true. Logan's wish is fulfilled towards the end of the episode, though it comes with a cost.

What's more, the task of finding Magneto is accomplished without much effort. You see, Magneto himself appears in front of the X-Men, albeit with the purpose of building his own army of mutants. Only Rogue and Roberto go with Magneto. Others stay with Xavier. You know what this means: It's three against...whatever number of mutants are there with the Professor. In less than 12 hours, Prime Sentinels would be reactivated. In other words, the stakes are high, and the X-Men's mission is urgent. But you won't feel this urgency while watching this episode. Episode 9, like other episodes, comes and goes like a blip on the radar. It shows you your favorite superheroes in battle and then pulls the curtain down. The last few episodes have started this trend of shoehorning cameos. This time, you get to meet Hulk, although it is not really Hulk.

Mister Sinister and Jean face each other. If these two had a competition regarding "who can say the most laughable words," Sinister would have easily emerged as a winner. This is how he greets the telepathic and telekinetic mutant, "I know your genes, Jean." If Sinister had been a tailor, he might have said, "I know the size of your jeans, Jean." With lines and thoughts like these, Sinister doesn't give vibes that are sinistrous.
